Hartford Water Softener Co. Call(262) 829-5961

Inherited a softener with your Hartford house? What to check first

A Hartford house may come with a softener already standing by the main line, set to whatever its last owner, or its factory, chose. Four checks tell you whether to trust it, reset it or replace it.

First, find out what water it is softening

Inside the City of Hartford, the water comes from Hartford Utilities and its five wells. In the Town of Hartford, the Town of Erin or the Town of Addison, a house may pump its own well instead, Hartford mailing address or not.

The bills settle it fast. A bill from Hartford Utilities means city water. If no water bill ever arrives, the house is very likely on a well, and the seller or landlord can say which and pass along any well paperwork.

Then read the setting

The hardness setting is on the softener's control head. The City's sewer utility points out that factory presets can be as high as 30 grains, and a unit nobody ever adjusted may still be running on one.

For city water the sewer utility asks for 20. The chloride guide on this site goes through that request and the 2026 state samples that read higher; for a new owner, the practical step is to learn what the faucet reads before changing anything.

Ask what has been going in the brine tank

Salt or potassium chloride: the brine tank holds one or the other, and it is what recharges the resin each time the softener regenerates. Ask the previous owner which they bought, so you keep filling it with the same.

In the city, whatever goes into that tank leaves through the drain line to the sewer, which is why the setting matters to the sewer utility at all.

Check whether it still softens

Hard water leaves spots and film on glass and fixtures and builds scale inside water heaters. Where city water runs 18 to 22 grains by the City's own figure, a softener that has quit lets all of that hardness through to every faucet.

If the spots come back on your glasses and fixtures, hardness is getting past the softener, and a reset alone may not fix it.

If the old unit has to go

One call on a weekday between 7am and 5pm gets a price for a Hartford-area house: say whether it is city water or a Town well, how many people live there, and where the old unit stands. On install day the plumber reads your faucet before anything is connected, takes the old unit out, and finishes with a retest that has to read zero.

Common questions

The listing said the house has soft water. What does that mean in Hartford?

Only that a softener was in place. City water arrives at 18 to 22 grains by the City's figure, so what comes out of the faucet depends on that softener working and being set for the water.

Is a softener set to 30 wrong for Hartford water?

It is set above every official Hartford figure: the City's 18 to 22 grains and the state's samples at about 23 to 26. The sewer utility asks city residents to use 20.
