Hartford water softener installation, starting at your faucet

With two official hardness numbers for the same city water, a Hartford installation starts by reading the one that matters most: the water at your own faucet, before anything is connected.

First, a reading at your faucet

Before a single fitting comes loose, the plumber tests your water. In a city where the published figure and the state's samples disagree, that first reading is your house's own number.

It matters more here than in most places, because the City's typical 18 to 22 grains and the state's 23 to 26 cannot both describe the same tap.

When the work wraps up, the same faucet gets checked again, and the work isn't over until hardness shows zero.

What the plumber does after that first reading

Any softener already in the house comes out first. Your new softener stands where the water line enters, its brine tank beside it, the bypass gets connected, and the drain line runs down to the drain, finishing at an air gap.

After that, the kitchen sink gets its RO drinking faucet. The final hardness check is the last step.

Basement, utility room or garage

A softener sits beside the incoming water line, close to a drain and a wall outlet. Basements are a common spot, but a utility room or garage serves just as well when the line comes in there.

Tell us on the call which part of the house the line enters and if an old softener is already there, and nobody needs to come out and look.

Why the plumber holds a Wisconsin license

Under Wis. Stat. ch. 145, the point where a softener drains into your plumbing, through its air gap, is a plumbing connection. That is why a Wisconsin-licensed plumbing contractor does the installation, and why our part ends once the softener is sized, supplied and scheduled.

Common questions

What if my faucet reads higher than the City's 18 to 22?

That would line up with the state's February 2026 samples, which read about 23 to 26 grains at the city wells. Whatever your faucet shows is the number for your house.

Does the new softener go where my old one was?

If that corner has the incoming line, a drain and a wall outlet close by, it is the natural place. Tell us where the old unit sits when you call.

When does the drinking-water faucet go in?

On install day, once the softener and its plumbing are done. It goes at the kitchen sink, ahead of the final hardness check.

My main line comes in through the garage. Is that a problem?

No. A garage works when the main line comes in there, with a drain and a wall outlet close by. Mention it on the call.
