Where Hartford's water hardness is published, since the annual report leaves it out

Hartford Utilities' annual water report does not list hardness, so the numbers people quote for the city come from two other documents. Here is what each one is, what it says, and how to read the pair together.

Not in the water utility's annual report

If you went to the annual report from Hartford Utilities, the city's water utility, and found no hardness, you read it correctly: it is not there.

The figures that circulate come from a different city department, the sewer utility, and from the state's own sampling of the city's wells.

Document one: the sewer utility's chloride FAQ

The City of Hartford Sewer Utility publishes a set of commonly asked questions about chloride, revised in January 2023. In it, water from the City's water utility is called typically 18 to 22 grains per gallon.

The number sits there for a practical reason. The same document asks residents to reset softeners to 20 grains and notes that factory presets can reach 30, so it needs a hardness figure to set the request against, and it gives one in grains, the unit a softener is set in.

Document two: the state's compliance samples

The second source is Wisconsin DNR compliance sampling for the Hartford waterworks. Samples taken at the five wells in February 2026 measured 390 to 450 milligrams per liter.

Those figures are in milligrams, not grains. Divide by 17.1 and they come to about 23 to 26 grains per gallon, a few grains above the sewer utility's typical range.

Reading the two together

The FAQ gives a typical range for city water; the DNR results are measurements at the wells on particular days. Neither was taken at your faucet, and neither covers a private well in the Towns around the city.

They do agree on the category. The USGS starts very hard at 180 milligrams per liter, or 10.5 grains, and both documents land far above that. What they disagree on is how far.

What to bring to a Hartford quote call

For a city address, bring nothing: both documents have already been read on our side, and the plumber's faucet reading on install day settles the difference for your house.

For a private well in the Towns, read us the hardness line from your lab report exactly as printed, unit included, and the iron line too if the report has one.

Common questions

Why would a sewer utility publish the water's hardness?

Because its chloride guidance asks residents to reset their softeners, and a setting means nothing without a hardness figure beside it. The sheet supplies 18 to 22 grains as typical for city water.

Which of the two figures should I go by?

Both are official. The FAQ's range is a typical description; the DNR's numbers are samples from February 2026. For one house, a reading at its own faucet is the tiebreaker.
